A few years ago I was fortunate enough to shoot Howard’s sister Gemma’s wedding to Tom so when he and Melissa asked me to document their nuptials at Bovey Castle, on Dartmoor, it was a bit of a no brainer. My fiancé Charlotte has cut Howard’s mum’s Roz’s hair for many years and over the recent years I’ve got to know their family really well. We were blessed with a glorious sunny day in October for the wedding and Bovey Castle looked absolutely stunning.
Melissa beamed as she walked up the aisle in the splendid cathedral room and though they hadn’t gone for the option of having the ring delivered by an owl, as we’d joked about in their meeting, it was a beautiful ceremony to photograph. The drinks reception was held on the lawn in the baking sun before we retired to the shade of the Edwardian Grill for the wedding breakfast.
Following some entertaining speeches from Melissa’s father, Howard and his best man the guests were led outside to take part in a ‘closest to the pin’ golf challenge which was great fun to document. I’m only glad no one photographed my appalling shot which I sliced into the woods, almost in the opposite direction to the hole!
Towards the end of the golfing we had an incredible sunset so I whipped Melissa and Howard off to the other side of the Castle to shoot a few portraits as the sky lit up. Sunsets like this one definitely make my job a lot easier when it comes to shooting couple portraits.
The evening reception was held in the Dartmoor suite and got of to a cracking start with Howard and Melissa’s emotionally choreographed first dance to Muse’s version of ‘I’m feeling good’.
Above are some of my favourite pictures from their big day
